Giving Trump a shameful amount of Lee-way

The RTD newsroom carries water for the a neo-Confederate canard

On June 11th, 2025, the Richmond Times-Dispatch published this news story by reporters Andrew Cain and Michael Martz:

On June 12th, I submitted the following letter to the editor:

The front page of the Richmond Times-Dispatch on Thursday June 12 featured some of the paper's most embarrassing water-carrying for Trump to date, fully passing along the administration's transparently bad-faith, reed-thin explanation for reverting Army bases' names to their Confederate namesakes. It defies belief that Andrew Cain, Michael Martz, and their editor(s) aren't able to tease out Trump's out-in-the-open wink to his white supremacist base. Whether they're racists themselves, or just both-sides hacks reflexively triangulating to an imagined middle, I can't say. Regardless, the resulting hed, dek, and lede—the part most people are going to read—is a shameful dereliction of duty to inform.

As far as I know, my letter was not published in the RTD’s Opinion section. I received no response.
