On May 5th, 2026, Samuel B. Parker published an article at the Richmond Times-Dispatch entitled “Texts, emails show officials trying to find path forward for controversial outdoor event space in West End.” It details how Richmond City Council President and 7th District Councilmember Cynthia Newbille, along with fellow longtime elected and frequent council ally Ellen Robertson (6th District), sent timely texts pressuring rookie member Andrew Breton (1st District) to extend deliberations on a controversial special-use permit for Lavender Hill, an event space in Sauer’s Gardens.

Parker reported that while Breton and Robertson answered inquiries about the text transcripts he obtained via public-records requests (emphasis mine):

Newbille, meanwhile, did not respond to a request for comment.

Newbille did not immediately respond to The Lookout’s request for comment on this matter. This post will be updated if/when she does.
